Alice (van der Wiel) Hidber

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Alice Mary Margaret Hidber (van der Wiel) on November 7, 2022 in Telkwa, BC, at the age of 78. 

Alice was predeceased by her parents, Willem van der Wiel and Ann (deGraaff) van der Wiel, her twin brother Gerard, brother Art, sisters Ann and Pam, and son-in-law Michael Tivers. She leaves behind her loving husband of 61 years, Joe, three daughters: Debbie Hidber-Tivers, Teresa (Matthew) Monkman, Coralee (Don) Karrer and seven grandchildren: Brooke, Joey, Braydon, Morgan, Trent, Leeam and Kyran.

Alice was born in Houston, BC on January 29, 1944. She and Gerard were the first recorded twins born in Houston at that time. She met Joe in 1957 and they quickly knew that they’d be life partners. They settled in the valley as a married couple in 1961.  After 42 years of working at Safeway, Alice retired to her next career as co-owner of All for Less Warehouse in Telkwa.  She enjoyed the many hours there with Coralee.

Alice was a people person, enjoying time spent with family and friends.  She embraced helping with Special Olympics to support Brooke and her peers. She also loved camping, quadding, entertaining, baking, and telling or hearing a good joke.

Alice was diagnosed with cancer in early December 2021. She never complained as she battled the disease with wonderful care from her doctors and the Northern Health Community Cancer Service at the BV District Hospital.  She passed peacefully at home on November 7. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. We hope people that knew Alice find some comfort in happy memories and in knowing that she is at peace. 

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 P.M on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at the Smithers Christian Reformed Church.
