Alvin Earl Domes
October 21, 1935 – November 20, 2024
Alvin Earl Domes was born on his family’s farm near Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan, to Archie and Emma Domes. One of 11 children, Alvin was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In his early 20s, he embarked on a journey to Kitimat, British Columbia, where he began working for Canadian National Railway (CN). Over his 44-year career with CN, Alvin lived in New Hazelton, Smithers, and Prince George before retiring and returning to Smithers, the community he loved.
Alvin was a people person to his core, known for his kind words, twinkling eyes, and ever-ready smile. Humble and kind-hearted, he brought warmth and positivity to everyone he encountered. An active volunteer in the Smithers community, Alvin dedicated his time to helping others. He served with Air Search and Rescue for many years and contributed to the Telkwa Museum. His deep faith was central to his life, and he was a devoted and active member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church.
Alvin had many passions, including traveling across Canada, canoeing in the Northwest Territories and Bulkley Valley lakes, photography, and spending time with his family. A talented gardener, he cultivated both food and flowers with care. Music held a special place in Alvin’s heart—he was a staunch supporter of the local music scene and rarely missed a performance, taking great joy in the talents of local musicians.
Alvin is lovingly remembered by his four children: Kim, Julie, Bruce (Wendy), and Wayne; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Dykstra and the many doctors and nurses who cared for Alvin during his final days.
Alvin was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. His gentle spirit, twinkling eyes, and ready smile will remain in our hearts forever.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Alvin’s life will be held at Mount Zion Lutheran Church in the spring.
