Obituary

Barbara Anne Greyeyes Schwab was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan on April 29th, 1948 to Flora Jeanne Greyeyes-Steele, and David Georges Greyeyes-Steele. Throughout her early life she lived in Muskeg Lake Cree Nation SK, Sintaluta SK, Punnichy SK, Battleford SK, and Fort Smith NWT, where she graduated from high school. Barbara attended nursing school at The Royal Alexander Hospital in Edmonton, where she received her RN in 1970. Upon graduation, she worked at the Royal Alexander Hospital, then she adventured to Europe for a few months with a classmate. Following her European adventure, she worked in Farro YK, Moose Factory ONT, and Nanaimo, BC. She decided to continue her education and completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Victoria. Upon graduating, in 1979, she moved to the Hazelton’s where she worked as a public health nurse until she retired in 2008. In 1980, Barbara met the love of her life, David Schwab. The two married in 1981. They enjoyed a lifetime of hiking, canoeing, skiing, gardening, travelling, raising their daughter Brenda (who was born in 1990), and growing in their faith and love of Jesus. In 2014, David and Barbara moved to Smithers, BC. In April of 2022, Barbara became a Grandma. Being a grandma was one of the most important and fulfilling roles of her life. She died peacefully at home on July 24th, 2023 with her husband David, daughter Brenda, grandson Logan, sister in law Wendy, and brother in law Murray, by her side. She is survived by her husband David, daughter Brenda (Keith), grandson Logan, Siblings: James (Rose), Beverly, Deborah, Diana (Garth), Dave, and Sarah, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her parents Flora Jeanne Greyeyes-Steele, and David Georges Greyeyes-Steele, little brother baby Dennis, sister Deanna Greyeyes, and nephew Jason Greyeyes.  Barbara will be remembered as a kind, gentle, and faithful woman.

David and Brenda would like to thank the medical community in Smithers for providing such compassionate and gentle care, especially Dr. Froese, the hospital staff, the Paramedics at BC Ambulance Service, everyone at Home Support, Home Care Nursing, the Bulkley Valley Hospice Society, and Danielle the OT. Because of all of you, and your support, we were able to honour Barbara’s wishes and have her home with us until the very end.
