Cornelis "Casey" Pieter den Boer

1937- 2026

Surrounded by his loving family, Casey den Boer passed away on August 25, 2026 at the age of 89. 

Casey was born in Colynsplaat, Netherlands on March 7, 1937. He immigrated to Canada at the age of 16, arriving by boat to Halifax and then train to Smithers. Casey met the love of his life, Alice, in Smithers and after a 3 year courtship, they were married on September 7, 1960. They lived in Smithers their entire married life and had 4 adventurous boys.  

Casey worked in the bush for the first year and then he started his occupation as a Mechanic. He then worked for Hoskin's Garage and later Frontier Chrysler. Casey opened his first business in 1967, the Home Oil Gas Station on Main Street. He worked there until 1976 when he moved his business to the Chevron Gas Station on Highway 16. Casey employed all of his sons at the station, and taught them a great work ethic.  

While he was at the Chevron Station, he opened a second business renting trucks. The business went so well that he opened up a new location on Tatlow Road called Smithers Truck Rentals in 1990.  He sold the business in 1997 and retired.  

Casey loved golfing, skiing and going for walks. In his later years he could be seen all over town on his bike. He was a faithful member of St. Joes Parish and Knights of Columbus. He also spent many years looking after the grounds around the school and church. You would often find him having coffee at coffee shops around town with his friends. For 20 years Casey and Alice spent their winters in Arizona, with their family and friends.  

Casey was well known to be a kind and gentle person. He loved to be around his family, often offering some input into conversations that involved wisecracks and one-liners. He was the best role model to his children and grandchildren, by the way that he lived his life. He was a loving husband and spoiled Alice all their married life. He will be deeply missed and will live in our hearts forever.
