Delbert Huskins Obituary

Delbert Alexander Huskins passed away due to natural causes, peacefully in a room full of love on January 17th, 2026. He was born in Port Mouton, NS on April 7, 1941.  He met his wife, Jenny Schrader, and they were married April 10, 1965. After he had his first daughter, Tina Marie, they followed his father out to Prince Rupert where he went to fish on his dad's boat, the JMH.  In the second year of living in Prince Rupert his daughter Lisa Alice was born; their family was complete. Turns out that Delbert got quite seasick and so he found employment on land working in the CN Roundhouse as a carman, retiring in 1982.

He was very well known in Prince Rupert and involved in the political scene, even meeting Pierre Elliott Trudeau in the 1970s. He met his second wife, Nada Boulter, in the 1990’s and they were married on October 25, 1997.  They enjoyed quite a nightlife. Delbert loved the Legion and he loved music; they really enjoyed karaoke which they did often. Dad spent a lot of time at the clubhouse that was located on the old Acropolis Manor grounds, where he had many friends and enjoyed many activities.  Those were good years for Dad.

Delbert was a very kind man and a very loving, caring Father and Uncle. He faced many challenges in life as he dealt with illness and other limitations that prevented him from remaining independent.

He was placed in permanent care at the Bulkley Lodge in Smithers in September 2005 where he spent the remainder of his life. This community took him into their hearts and cared for him; he made some wonderful friends. The similarity between Prince Rupert and Smithers is that it takes the community to care for a person; over the years countless people have done exactly that, and his family will be forever grateful.

Alexandra, his granddaughter, moved to Smithers and in the last 5 years has spent a lot of time with her Grampy.  They were very close and she spent a lot of time loving him, seeing that he was looked after, keeping him company and kept him in touch with family via Facebook, which meant so much.  There were the endless games of crib, where she showed seemingly endless patience.  We knew that she was there purely out of love and it warmed our hearts.

Our family would like to thank the Bulkley Lodge and its special employees for the care and love that they gave him over the past 20 years; Shelene MacNeil for being a good friend and compass to his advocate, and a special shout out to Dr. Haskins who is the epitome of what a doctor should be.

He is survived by his daughter Tina Murray (Tony Briglio), daughter Lisa Bernhardt, grandson Matthew Murray (Dustin McKay) granddaughter Alexandra Murray. Brother Ira (Brenda) Huskins, sister June (Andrew) Decker. Nieces Terri and Rebecca, nephews David, Andrew and Jacob and 5 great nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife Nada, parents Charlie and Lena Huskins, and brother Emerson.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Saint John James Anglican Church. 1636 Princess St. Smithers, BC at 2:30 PM on Saturday, January 24th, 2026. Delbert will be laid to rest in Prince Rupert at a later date.

He was a true gentleman, positively a character, but surely unforgettable.  This was reflected by the many people that came to say goodbye to him in his final hours.

Dad never liked to say goodbye because he said goodbye was forever, so for now we will just say "Toodle-oo!”
