Dennis Edwin MacKay

Dennis was born in Edmonton AB on March 23, 1942 to Duncan and Edna (Woodcock) Mackay and died August 14, 2024 in Smithers, BC.

Dennis was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.  Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of almost 58 years, Edith, two children Laura (Floyd Gilbert), and Dennis John, seven grandchildren Katie (Mitch), Michael, Greg, Samantha, Emma, Montana, and Aiden, as well as two great grandchildren Ava and Elsa.  He also leaves behind two sisters and their families in Alberta as well as numerous extended family and close friends.

Dennis spent his life in public service.  He was a man of honor and integrity.  He joined the RCMP in 1961 and spent 28 years serving in various communities in BC. He received a Commendation as well as a Long Service Medal.  During this time he spent two years on the Musical Ride and retired as a S/Sgt. Dennis often said this was his most rewarding career and he maintained an exceptionally close relationship with his troop-mates for more than 63 years.

Upon retirement from the RCMP he continued to provide public service for a further 10 years as a coroner and licensed public investigator.

His final career was serving as MLA for 8 years for the Bulkley Valley Stikine region.  During this time he received the Queen’s Medal for public service.  Dennis enjoyed his work in promoting resource development and helping constituents navigate bureaucracy.

In his spare time Dennis loved curling, downhill and cross-country skiing, fishing, canoeing and traveling.

Dennis will be interned at the RCMP Depot in Regina, Saskatchewan.

A Celebration of Life will be held on September 21, 2024 from 1-3pm at the Legion in Smithers.
