Dr. Jocelyn Pearce Obituary

Dr. Jocelyn Catherine Pearce

1932-2024

Dr. Jocelyn Catherine Pearce passed away peacefully on October 10, 2024. She will be greatly missed by her three children and their partners, Kathy Inglis (Richard), Lyn Nugent, and Ted Nugent (Kristina), four grandchildren, Ben, Rachael (Ruben), Katie (Matt), and Simon, and two great grandchildren, Isabelle and Henry. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Bulkley Valley District Hospital and to Dr. Marlowe Haskins for his thoughtful care over the years.

Born in 1932 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Jocelyn spent her childhood moving often with her military family who finally settled in London, Ontario where she attended Western University becoming one of only 5 women to attain a medical degree in her year. After interning in both Canada and the U.S., Jocelyn practiced radiology for almost 50 years in Ontario and British Columbia. She was particularly proud of her time serving the population of the Bulkley Valley and surrounding area from 1986 until her retirement in 2006.

Jocelyn's love of learning inspired her throughout her life. She was never without a project and she approached every one with passion, precision and creativity. Her strong belief in the value of community led her to volunteer in leadership roles for many organizations. Jocelyn was instrumental in the formation of the Canadian Arabian Horse Association and PARD Therapeutic Riding in Ontario, and the Farmers' Market Association in Smithers, B.C. She was an active member of spinners and weavers guilds wherever she lived and served on the board of the Bulkley Valley Museum Association.

Jocelyn loved animals and nature; one of her favourite memories was spending her 2nd paycheck to buy her 1st horse. Her enthusiasm for all types of creatures created a wonderful menagerie on her first farm. She took great joy and pride in breeding Crabbet Arabian horses for decades. Once settled in Smithers, she built Narnia Farms, a beautiful organic herb and flower garden, and began creating natural body products and organic foods. Jocelyn loved seeing people enjoying tours of the gardens and having tea on the lawn. In 2020 Jocelyn was instrumental in creating Out of Hand, a year-round venue for local food producers and artists.

Through medicine, food and environmental action, Jocelyn cared for the people around her. She was known as a thoughtful and professional caregiver, a kind and patient teacher, a dedicated craftsperson, and an involved community member whose integrity and foresight led to many positive changes. Her energy and determination were an inspriation to those who worked with her. Jocelyn Pearce will be remembered and missed by many.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local Farmers' Market Association or the Bulkley Valley Museum.

Respecting her wishes, her funeral will be private
