It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Leach, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, family member, businessman, and friend, whose strength, generosity, and deep commitment to his family and community touched countless lives.
John was born in Smithers, British Columbia, where his love for the Bulkley Valley first began. As a teenager, his family moved to Merritt and later to Cloverdale, where he met the love of his life, Lucille. Together they returned to Smithers in the early 70’s to build their life, raise their family, and become deeply rooted in the community John always considered home.
Upon returning to Smithers, John and his cousin, Tom, took over the family business, Bulkley Valley Wholesale, proudly continuing the legacy established by their parents. Through decades of hard work, integrity, and dedication, John earned the respect of customers, colleagues, and friends alike.
Above all else, John was devoted to his family. He worked tirelessly to provide for those he loved and took immense pride in Lucille, their children, and grandchildren. His quiet strength, steadfast support, and unconditional love were the foundation of his family and will remain his greatest legacy. He was also known for his quick wit, infectious sense of humour, and ability to make people laugh, bringing lightness and joy to every gathering.
John embraced life with enthusiasm and was happiest staying active and spending time with others. Golf was his greatest passion and remained constant throughout his life. In his earlier years, he also enjoyed curling and Oldtimers hockey, where he built many lasting friendships both on and off the ice. Retirement brought a new passion for motorcycle riding, and he treasured exploring the roads of northwestern British Columbia and Arizona with friends.
In his later years, John's faithful companion was his beloved dog, Archie. Their daily walks and adventures together brought John immense happiness and reflected the loyalty, kindness, and gentle spirit that defined him.
He is lovingly remembered by his beloved wife, Lucille; his children, Torin (Debbie) and Erin; his grandchildren, Addison and Chloe; his sisters, Donna, Cindy and Deborah; his extended family; and the many friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
John will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to family, his strong work ethic, his generous heart and the countless friendships he built throughout his life. His legacy lives on in every round of golf, every game of hockey, every end on the curling sheet, every mile travelled on two wheels, every walk with Archie, and, most importantly, in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know and love him.
He is proceeded in death by his parents, Bill and Renie Leach; and his brother Kerry.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Smithers, BC, on August 10th, 2026, at the Smithers Golf Club at 1pm.
