Marcel (Marty) Ehalt Obituary

On Monday, June 28th, 2021, Marty passed away peacefully after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Marcel was born in Fort St. John, BC on May 4th, 1960, the second of four children born to Erwin and Irene Ehalt. In 1963 the family moved to Hazelton for a brief stay, thereafter the family moved to Telkwa. It is here that Marty grew up and planted roots. Although small Marty was athletic which served him well when he became a talented gymnast. His humor and resilience was evident while Marty participated in a variety of sports, hunting, and fishing.

After graduating in 1978, he worked for Groot Sawmill for five years. In 1984, he began working for Avco Financial Services, working both in Vernon and Prince George. Leaving Avco he worked at a local paving company before becoming a painting apprentice for Al’s Custom Auto body for ten years. He worked for a local sporting goods store before moving to the Town of Smithers finishing up his career working for the Town.

Marcel was an active firefighter, starting as a junior firefighter in Telkwa for two years while his father was Fire Chief. He continued to serve as a firefighter in Smithers for thirty-seven years where the Smithers Fire Department quickly became a second family to Marty.

Marty was married to Kelly Bovill on August 15th, 1992. Eight years later they were blessed with their daughter Jordan on March 26th, 2000, and celebrated the birth of their son Connor four years later on January 2nd, 2004. Marty never missed an opportunity to spend time with his children whether it was sitting front row at Connors basketball games, watching dozens of Jordan’s music performances, or traveling across the country to watch his children compete at karate tournaments.

He was a devote family man and enjoyed his leisure time with family and friends. Marty will always be remembered for his quick wit and fortitude which helped him remain positive through many of the health challenges over the past couple of years.

Marcel was predeceased by his mother, Irene, in 1990 and father Erv in 2018. He is survived by his wife Kelly, daughter Jordan (Zach), and son Connor. Additionally, he is also survived by his three siblings, older brother Garth (Kelly, Spenser, Ryan, and Owen), sister Lianne (Blaine, Quentin, Karly, Kasey, Riley, Jazz), and sister Shelley (Paul, Michael)

In lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of Marty may be made to the BV Health Foundation P.O. Box 551, Smithers, BC., V0J 2N0

A very special thank you to the Smithers Cancer Clinic, the Smithers Hospital, and the hundreds of health care professionals who fought for Marty every step of the way.
