Thomas Mesich
Sept 19, 1936- July 18,2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Tom Mesich.
Tom died peacefully with family and friends at his side.
Tom was predeceased by his mother Yvonne, father Mike, sister Kitty, brother-in-law Joe, brothers Tony, Steve and Emil and sister-in-law Ruth. Tom is survived by his sister-in-Law Mary Lou, nephews Tom and Mark and nieces Pat, Coleen, Tanya, Carmen, Karen, Sharlene and Brenda. Tom is also survived by special friends Mike and Luella Moore, Lorna and Paul Perry and Phil Langevin.
Tom was a life long learner who had a keen interest in the history of the Bulkley Valley and the Cariboo. His extensive reading of local and regional newspapers and authors gave Tom an encyclopaedic knowledge of the areas. In his last year Tom undertook a writing project of his own penning a history of the Mesich family. A memory keeper, Tom could share stories of local lore and people as easily as breathing. He was a kind storyteller, never saying a bad word about anyone.
Tom spent many years and had many happy memories at Babine Lake. Being true to his pioneering self he decided to say goodbye to the lake when unnecessary services like power were brought in.
He was a master welder, mechanic and general tinkerer. His happy place was his shop; inventive and industrious he could make anything broken work again. There was no such thing as a piece of junk to Tom, he could take a discarded shopping cart and make a dolly and a rabbit trap out of it.
Tom’s vegetable garden was as unique as he was. He cultivated peas from the original seed his mother had from when he was a child. He ensured her tradition was carried on by sending a box of seeds to his niece Coleen.
Tom loved music and live events and made annual pilgrimages to the music festivals and rodeos around the Valley in his truck and camper. He also enjoyed watching local sports teams and was a regular spectator at the hockey rink and at the ball fields.
Tom will be missed by his many friends and neighbours up and down the Valley. His daily walks and chats, his smiling face, his kindness in all its forms will live on in all who knew him.
We would like to thank the staff at G.R. Baker Memorial hospital in Quesnel and the staff at Bulkley Valley District Hospital in Smithers.
Tom spent a lot of time at the Bulkley Valley Museum talking with staff about the history of the valley. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bulkley Valley Museum.
Tom’s wishes were to have a graveside service.
The service will be held Friday August 1, 2025 at 11:00am at the Smithers Cemetery.
