Walter Hromatka Obituary

Walter Hromatka passed away peacefully in the Bulkley Lodge in Smithers, BC on June 2, 2019.

Walter was born in 1926 in Vienna. He was a radioman in the German Navy and returned from a POW camp in 1946.  He then spent the next five years in the Austrian police force. He came to Canada in 1951.  During his early years in Canada he cut pulpwood, laid rails, worked in sawmills and ran a logging tug.  After earning his Deep-Sea ticket at the Vancouver Radio college, he joined the Ministry of Transport.  His postings included Prince Rupert Marine Radio, the Arctic weather stations, Eureka and Alert, the Williams Lake airport, the weather ship St. Catharines and finally the airport in Smithers, BC.  He retired after 30 years.

Walter is survived by his wife, Liliana; his children from a previous marriage, Margot, Lizbeth, Wolfgang, and Teri; grandchildren Sarah, Matthew, Melissa, and Teri; great grandchildren Darian, Sidney, Savannah and Micheal.

We would like to extend a thank you to Dr. Flynn, Dr. Niethammer  and the nurses and staff at the Bulkley Lodge for their wonderful care and attention.  A Memorial Mass will be held on June 17th at 1:00 pm in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Smithers.
